Short Itinerary - Choquequirao to Machu Picchu 6 Days

Complete Itinerary - Choquequirao to Machu Picchu 6 Days:

Cusco - Capuliyoc - Chiquisca - Santa Rosa

We depart early from Cusco to Capuliyoc (2900 m), with a visit to the Saywite archaeological site en route. At Capuliyoc, our trek begins, and we will also meet our team of muleteers who will accompany us from now on.

We will have a view of the Apurímac Canyon (1500 m), where we might see condors soaring. We then descend to Chiquisca (1900 m) for lunch. Continuing our descent, we reach Playa Rosalinas (1500 m) and cross a bridge over the Apurímac River.

We then ascend in zigzags to the village of Santa Rosa (2000 m), where we will spend the night under the moonlight and the sounds of the animals. The family will prepare a comforting dinner for us.

Santa Rosa - Marampata – Choquequirao

We wake up to the sound of birds singing, have breakfast, and prepare for our trek. Along the route, we will encounter a variety of wild flora and fauna.

Some parts of the route are a bit challenging until we reach Marampata (2900 m), where we will spend the night. After a brief rest, we will head out to visit the Choquequirao Archaeological Complex. We will start with a tour of Pikiwasi, the priest’s house, the main plaza, the Hanan (upper part), and the Hurin (lower part). We will then descend to the terraces where the Incas carved the Andean camelid "the llama" in stone.

After the visit, we return to Marampata for dinner and to spend the night.

Marampata - Río Blanco - Maizal

Today we set out early, ascending to the Choquequirao Pass (3300 m). After this, it's a downhill trek to Pinchaunuyoc (2750 m).

We will continue descending until we reach Río Blanco, where we can rest, take advantage of the river for washing or bathing, and have lunch. We will then begin our ascent to Maizal, where we will spend the night, getting closer to the sacred Apus of the Incas.

Maizal - Minas Victori - Yanama

This morning, we will enjoy the surrounding landscapes. Along this route, you can see remnants of the ancient Inca path, some small archaeological remains, and Inca channels that border it. We will pass by Mina Victoria, where silver was extracted, and reach the San Juan Pass (4200 m).

It is a strategic location for lunch. If we climb a bit further, we will reach the summit with views of the Choquetakarpo, Padreyoc, and Pumasillo mountains. Finally, we will descend to the village of Yanama, where we will have dinner and spend the night in the home of one of the locals.

Yanama - Hidroeléctrica - Aguas Calientes

Today, we will travel by local vehicle to the town of Santa Teresa and visit the Cocalmayo hot springs, where we will enjoy a refreshing bath and spend a memorable time. We will have lunch there. Later, the vehicle will take us to the hydroelectric station, where we will start a short walk along the railway through a path covered with lush vegetation, where we can see coffee, banana, and avocado plantations.

Finally, we will arrive in Aguas Calientes and head to our hotel, where we will check in, relax, and prepare for dinner.

Aguas Calientes - Machu Picchu - Cusco

The moment we have been waiting for has arrived. Today, we will explore the majestic and incredible Inca citadel of Machu Picchu, discovering Inca architecture: neighborhoods, plazas, houses, agricultural areas, pathways, observatories, and more.

The guided tour lasts 2 hours. Afterward, we will return to Aguas Calientes for lunch, then head to the hotel to collect our belongings. We will proceed to the Aguas Calientes station to take the train to Poroy, and from there, we will travel by vehicle to the city of Cusco.
