Today we will begin exploring the Sacred Valley of the Incas, along the banks of the Vilcanota River. The excursion starts with the Inca citadel of Pisac, which includes terraces, fountains, observatories, and the largest Inca cemetery in the region. This was a control point and domain of the Incas in the Sacred Valley.
After the guided visit, we will descend to the town and head to the traditional Pisac market, where we will have the opportunity to discover the customs, gastronomy, and crafts of the local people.
We will then continue to the heart of the Sacred Valley, Urubamba, where we will have lunch before heading to the Ollantaytambo fortress. Located on a hill overlooking the town, notable buildings include the Temple of the Sun and its gigantic monoliths: the Mañaracay or Royal Hall, the Incahuatana, and the Princess Baths. At the top, there is a fortress with a series of carved stone terraces, built to control and monitor the entrance to this part of the valley and prevent possible invasions from the jungle-dwelling peoples.
Next, we will proceed to Chinchero, where we will admire an authentic Inca urban layout, the remains of the Inca palace, a resting place of Inca Tupac Yupanqui, and the colonial church built on stone foundations. This area, surrounded by the Vilcanota mountain range, is known as the land of the rainbow due to the play of light and shadows on its terraces and archaeological remains. The palace is incredible, with its construction and the placement of each stone forming zigzag terraces and polished stone walls.
