Our excursion to the Colca Canyon starts early. At the indicated time, we will pick you up from your hotel and head towards the canyon.
In Chivay (3630 m), we will have breakfast before continuing to the Cruz del Cóndor viewpoint, where we will admire the majestic flight of these birds for approximately one hour.
Next, we will transfer about 20 minutes to Pampa San Miguel (3280 m) in Cabanaconde, the starting point of our trek. After about 3 hours, we will arrive at San Juan de Chucho, crossing the Colca River via a hanging bridge. We will explore the area while our guide talks about local medicinal plants. Meals and accommodation will be provided by local families.
Arequipa (2320 m) – Chivay (3630 m) – Cabanaconde (3280 m) – San Juan de Chucho (2450 m).
After breakfast, we will continue our hike through the Colca Canyon.
Our first stop will be the small village of Cosñirhua (2660 m). We will then proceed to another small village located inside the Colca Canyon: Malata.
After approximately 2 additional hours of hiking, we will head to the Sangalle Oasis (2200 m). Here, we will rest and enjoy some relaxation time in the pools (20°C – 68°F). We will have lunch and spend a free afternoon, which may include playing volleyball, lounging in a hammock, or joining the guide for a one-hour walk around the oasis.
San Juan de Chucho (2450 m) – Sangalle Oasis (2200 m)
This stage of the hike is the most challenging. Following the guide's instructions, we will wake up very early to begin the trek to Cabanaconde (3280 m), which will take approximately 3 hours, depending on the pace.
Upon reaching Cabanaconde, we will have breakfast and then take a bus to Chivay, stopping at the Wayrapunku viewpoint to admire the Inca and pre-Inca terraces of Maca. We will also visit the La Calera hot springs in Chivay, where you can have lunch. On the way back to Arequipa, we will stop at the Mirador de Los Andes (4900 m) to view the volcanoes and visit the Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reserve to observe vicuñas, alpacas, and llamas.
