The three-day Huchuy Qosqo trek is an ideal option for those with limited time but who want to experience hiking before Machu Picchu. Located north of Cusco, this Inca archaeological site, which means "Little Cusco" in Quechua, offers a quick exploration of Andean treasures with panoramic views of peaks like Sawasiray, Pitusiray, La Verónica, and Chicon. It is the perfect choice for those seeking a shorter mountainous experience without losing the charm of the Andes.

Day 1

Sacsayhuamán

Cusco – Tambomachay – Huchuy Qosqo

In the morning, we will depart from the hotel to Tambomachay, an archaeological complex with ceremonial water fountains. From there, we will start the hike through puna landscapes, ascending to the Sicllaccasa Pass (4100 m) with spectacular views.

We will continue ascending to the top to cross to the other side, a 45-minute walk to the upper end of the valley. We will have lunch by Lake Qoricocha, where we will see various birds and lagoons.

Next, we will reach the highest point, the Abra de Rumicruz, to enjoy a snack and the natural surroundings. We will descend to Pucamarca via an ancient Inca path, passing by Huchuy Qosqo, a key archaeological site from the Inca period.

Huchuy Qosqo - Tauca – Chinchero

We will wake up to amazing views of the Sacred Valley of the Incas, snow-capped mountains, and the Urubamba River. We will have breakfast with a local family and then explore the palace of the eighth Inca ruler. We will tour its agricultural terraces, enclosures, well-preserved storage rooms, and hydraulic system.

Next, we will ascend to the pass (4250 m), immersing ourselves in puna landscapes with sparse vegetation like ichu and stunning views of the Vilcabamba Mountain Range. We will descend towards Piuray Lagoon, crossing Andean valleys filled with crops, and finish in Chinchero, where we will stay in a family house that will involve us in their activities.

Huchuy Qosqo (3600 m) – Pass (4200 m) – Chinchero (3760 m)

Chinchero – Maras – Moray – Cusco

The excursion will start in Chinchero, a town frozen in time where Inca culture endures. We will visit its main square, a harmonious fusion of Inca and colonial architecture, where the temple was built on the site of the ancient palace of Inca Tupac Yupanqui.

We will then head to Moray, a unique archaeological site with agricultural terraces in natural depressions, used as an agricultural laboratory.

Next, we will proceed to the Salineras de Maras, with 4500 salt pans irrigated with salty water from which salt is harvested once it evaporates. After admiring the production process, we will return to Cusco and your respective hotel.
