New Circuits in Machu Picchu, Explanation

On May 15th, the Ministry of Culture established new visiting circuits in the citadel of Machu Picchu, announcing that this new approach is intended to protect and preserve the archaeological site. These regulations will take effect on June 1st of this year, with some routes being available during peak seasons, as indicated in the text.

You will visit from the heights of Machu Picchu Mountain, offering spectacular panoramic views, to the enigmatic Inca Bridge. Each route promises a unique adventure, and it is important to note that each route is different from the others, allowing you to appreciate each location. Here, I will explain all the circuits and which ones are best for you to buy and explore Machu Picchu better.

Circuit 1: Panoramic Circuit

This circuit is perfect for those who wish to enjoy spectacular views and capture the essence of the site from various elevated angles. Below, I describe what to expect on each route of the circuit:

Route 1A Machu Picchu Mountain:

To access this route, you need to go to the checkpoint and climb up to the terrace area or upper part, which is above the Guardian’s House. This point offers panoramic views and the iconic postcard photo of Machu Picchu. Then, you will climb Machu Picchu Mountain. The approximate round-trip time is 3 hours. This route does not allow you to descend to the urban area; you must return the same way you came up.

Route 1B Upper Terrace:

To take this route, you need to climb up to the upper terraces of the citadel, from where you can observe the Machu Picchu citadel and take the classic photo. This route allows you to take your time to admire the landscape before returning the same way.

Ruta 1 B Ruta Terraza Superior

Route 1C Sun Gate (available during peak season):

To take this route, you need to climb up to the upper part or the terrace area, where you also have the option to take the classic photo of Machu Picchu. This route includes the path to the iconic Sun Gate, a strategic point for sunrise views over the citadel. The round-trip hike will take you about 2 hours.

Route 1D Inca Bridge (available during peak season):

Once at the upper part or terrace area, this site offers the option to take the classic photo of Machu Picchu. Then, we take a walk to the ancient Inca Bridge, showcasing Inca engineering and construction techniques. The approximate round-trip time is 1 hour and 30 minutes.

The entire Circuit 1 does not allow entry to the urban sector or lower part of the citadel, but we do have the classic photo of Machu Picchu.

Circuit 2: Classic Machu Picchu

This circuit allows us to explore the lower or urban area of the Machu Picchu citadel. In this case, you will still get the classic photo of Machu Picchu, but from a different angle. This circuit offers more options for sites to visit.

Route 2A Designed Classic Route

To access this route, we must pass through the checkpoint and climb up to the Guardian’s House, where you can take the classic photo of Machu Picchu. Here, you can only take the photo before descending to the main gate, the Temple of the Sun, the Sacred Rock, and down to the Temple of the Condor, exiting through the lower part.

*If you wish to explore more sites within the Machu Picchu citadel, this is the circuit you should choose. I recommend purchasing it weeks in advance.

Ruta A Acircuito De La Ciudad Inca

Route 2B Lower Terrace Route

Similar to the previous route, you must pass through the checkpoint and proceed to the lower part, which includes the warehouses and terraces. You will have access to visit the Inca House, the water fountains, the water mirrors, and exit through the Pisonae Plaza.

Ruta 2 B De La Llaqta

Circuit 3: Machu Picchu Ticket

Circuit 3 offers a new experience, featuring four different routes. You can explore from Huayna Picchu to the adventure in the Great Cave and Huchuypicchu. This circuit takes you through the urban area of Machu Picchu, discovering historical sites without the classic panoramic photo.

Route 3A Huayna Picchu Mountain Route

To access this route, we enter from the lower part. This route does not give us the option to climb to the upper part where the classic photo is taken. Our journey is through the urban area, visiting the Inca House, the main plaza, and the Sacred Rock. From there, you will find another checkpoint that will lead you to the incredible Huayna Picchu.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Circuits to Machu Picchu

In 2024, the Ministry of Culture of Peru has implemented new circuits and regulations for visiting Machu Picchu, enhancing the tourist experience and ensuring the preservation of this world heritage site. Based on these frequently asked questions, I will provide you with the best circuits and advice on choosing the best one according to your needs.

What is the best circuit of Machu Picchu?

New circuits have been established for the peak season, and the best circuit to explore in Machu Picchu will depend on what you want to see and your physical condition. According to the new regulations, Circuit 2 would be the most comprehensive, as it allows for an extensive tour of the main attractions of the citadel, including the Temple of the Sun, the Sacred Plaza, and the Sacred Rock. This circuit takes approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes and is ideal for those seeking a complete experience.

Which circuit to choose in Machu Picchu 2024?

For 2024, several circuits have been defined with different levels of difficulty and duration:

  • Circuit 1 (Panoramic): Ideal for those with limited time or who prefer a less demanding tour, this circuit offers panoramic views and the opportunity to take the classic photo from the Guardian’s House.
  • Circuit 2 (Classic): Recommended for those who want a deeper understanding of Machu Picchu, extensively covering the citadel.
  • Circuit 3 (Royalty): Suitable for visitors who prefer to explore less crowded areas of the citadel or have physical restrictions. It is the shortest and passes through the lower part.

Best circuits to visit Machu Picchu

Circuit 2 remains the favorite for most visitors due to its completeness and the wealth of sites it includes. However, Circuit 1 is an excellent alternative for those seeking less physical effort or with less time available. It offers a quicker experience with less congestion. On the other hand, Circuit 3 is a new option that allows you to explore sites that few visit.

It is essential to plan ahead and book your tickets, as capacity is limited and regulated to protect the archaeological site.
