Uyo Uyo Archaeological Complex is located at 3,570 meters above sea level, where the Inca influence is present and that is why the polished stones in its structure are notorious.

Declared as Cultural Heritage of the Nation, it is a historical center that during the last years has been visited more and more due to the customs of the place and the history that it contemplates as a legacy.

History of Uyo Uyo

More than 500 years ago, the inhabitants of the Caylloma culture lived in the Uyo Uyo Archaeological Complex, a citadel known as an agricultural control point in the Colca Valley, which was reconstructed to recover its architectural value.

It is composed of four main sectors: urban part which is divided into two parts, terraces for agricultural use and cemetery.

What does Uyo Uyo mean?

Uyo Uyo is also known as Maukallaqta, for being an ancient citadel of pre-Inca and Inca culture.

What to see and do in Uyo Uyo?

To get to know the ancient city of Collagua, trekking is one of the activities that will best suit us in this adventure, where we can enjoy:

  • The viewpoints, as viewpoints that are throughout the route to Uyo Uyo, so you can enjoy all the landscapes it offers.
  • Inca architecture is the main attraction of this citadel.
  • To appreciate the Terraces that fulfilled the important function of food production.
  • View of the sundial, a space that was used for astronomical studies.
  • The presence of irrigation canals throughout the complex.
  • You will find along the way the variety of crops grown by the people who live in the area.

It is advisable to know that the best time to visit the Uyo Uyo Archaeological Site is during the months of April to November (low rainfall), likewise, you can enter the complex at any time of the day, for this you have to wear comfortable clothes, hiking shoes, sunscreen and extra money for any circumstance.

How to get to Uyo Uyo?

The Archaeological Complex of Uyo Uyo is located in the province of Caylloma, in Arequipa. And to reach the destination you can take the following options:

  • You can take a vehicle from the Arequipa Terminal Terrestre to Chivay for approximately three hours, at which point you must board a van that will take you to Coporaque or Yanque so that you can then walk to the complex.
  • And if we are in the Plaza de Armas of Yanque, we will begin our walk north for about 30 minutes to reach the destination of Uyo Uyo.
