Inca Trail 4 days tour details

The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in 4 days is one of the most incredible treks. Arguably the best trekking experience in Peru, but also one of the most authentic and historic treks in the world, it is a blend of the cultural and the natural. The trail winds through some of the most sublime landscapes of the Peruvian Andes and, if that wasn't enough, leads to one of the wonders of the world, the famous Machu Picchu. Day 1: Cusco - Wayllabamba - Yuncachimpa

We will leave Cusco by tourist bus around 5:30 am and take the road to the Sacred Valley of the Incas. We will arrive at "km 82", the starting point, we will have a short break in Ollantaytambo where we will have the possibility to have breakfast. At km 82 we will meet the rest of the group (porters and cooks). The trek will start passing a suspension bridge over the Urubamba River at 2650 mts. The first day of the trek is easy and is a good training for the other days. We will start by a flat path with small slopes, surrounded by Cactus vegetation, passing by small villages, we will arrive to a high part from where we can appreciate the archaeological site of Llactapata, our guide will give us a complete explanation of the place. Then we continue our way to Miskay where we will stop for lunch, in the afternoon we will continue our journey to Wayllabamba (3000m) with a moderate slope. Finally we will arrive to Yuncachimpa (3300m) where we will spend the night, this last stretch is with a good slope. From here we will have a magnificent view of the Nevado de Veronica.

Day 2: Warmiwañusca - Pacaymayo - Chaquicocha

The second day is the "free walking" day. Everyone can walk at their own pace.

Naturally, the whole group will meet during the breaks. In the morning the trek will follow the trail through the Llulluchapampa valley. The first 3km are stairs - enjoy the jungle and the sound of the water. From Llulluchapampa we follow the trail (2-3 hours) until we reach the highest point of this part, the Warmihuañusca (4200), which is known as the most difficult part of the Inca Trail.

After a short rest at the top, from this place our trail has been restored and some sections are still from the Inca period, we will continue the hike this section is downhill to the Pacamayo River (3600m), in this place we will have lunch, In the afternoon we will begin to climb stairs until we reach the archaeological site of Runkurakay (3780m), then we continue our ascent to the Runkurakay pass (4000m), after a break we will begin to descend until we reach the archaeological site of Sayacmarka (3600m), from where we can see our camp in Chaquicocha (3550m). We will still have to descend to Conchamarka (3550m), and then walk covered with lush vegetation, until we reach our camp, here you can relax and enjoy the magnificent view of the mountains.

Day 3: Chaquicocha - Phuyupatamarca - Wiñaywayna

This third day is the most beautiful of the trek. You will see a change in the ecological system as we walk towards the Wiñayhuayna jungle (2680m). This is a pass through rainforest and an ancient Inca tunnel before the third pass that offers a magnificent view of the Urubamba River valley. The nearest camp is Phuyupatamarca ("city above the clouds") with an altitude of 3680. It is a well-preserved site, impressive for its circular walls and ingenious aqueduct system that still supplies the baths. Next, we pass under another Inca tunnel, ahead we visit the ruins of Wiñayhuayna ("forever young") with an altitude of 2680m. The Inca stairs change to a zig-zag path, we will visit the terraces of Intipata (2800m), finally we will arrive to our last camp. Once installed we will make a last visit of the impressive archaeological site of Wiñaywayna, to walk its streets, stairs take beautiful pictures of the place.

Day 4: Wiñayhuayna – Machupicchu – Cusco

After breakfast at 4:30 am, we start our hike with our headlamps to the Sun Gate (Inti Punku). From here you will have a panoramic view of Machu Picchu and Wayna Picchu.

The last descent will take an hour before visiting Machu Picchu (2400m) at 08:00. Here you will enjoy the spiritual charm during a guided tour (+-2h). This visit will help you understand the meaning of the ancient Inca constructions. We will see how spectacular is the citadel of Machu Picchu, the "old mountain", considered a jewel of Inca architecture: with neighborhood squares, houses, agricultural areas, roads, observatories, places of worship etc. built on a narrow ridge lined with cliffs: an impressive spectacle that changes with the progression of the sun. It was discovered on July 24, 1911 by the American explorer Hiram Bingham. After the tour, we will descend to Aguas Calientes, where you can enjoy the thermal baths to relax (entrance fee S/.10) if time permits. In the afternoon we will take the train to Cusco.
